Member of the Month: August 2014

We're so pleased to introduce Jo Pettitt, our member of the Month for August 2014!

Here's what Jo shared with us:

Hi, I'm Jo, 57 year old grandma with a passion for crafting, mainly card-making and the occasional scrapbook.

I started crafting around 8/9 years ago after receiving a handmade card from a friend. I had quite a stressful job at the time and found crafting was a wonderful way to relax. I mainly make cards and have done the occasional scrapbook/memory book for family.

In 2011 my Dad died, and we raised money for Mencap from donations in lieu of flowers. Mencap was our choice, as my sister, who died in 1973 had spina bifida and my family have always been involved with Mencap and I helped run a local group for young people and adults with learning disabilities in my younger days.

We wanted to donate the money to the local group, for a particular project if possible. When I met with the fundraiser, Dawn, she told me they ran an Arts and Crafts session. I met with the group, including staff and volunteers, I applied to join as a volunteer to help out at the group and spent Tuesdays helping out (until my 'grandma' duties made it such that I had to give it up). Some of the money we raised went towards a Cuttlebug, paint driers and clock making equipment

These were resources that the group wanted but could not justify the outlay from the cherished funds, so our donation was gratefully received and used well.

I then also decided to give a percentage of the money I raised for selling cards, mainly to family and work colleagues, to Mencap. I don't donate large sums, but it all goes to the Art and Craft group to allow them to continue buying the additional items they need to allow the members to enjoy a range of activities/ I love my card-making, and knowing that in some small was I am continuing my sister and Dad's memories by giving something back to Mencap too.
