We love this time of the month because we get to learn about our members that little bit more and know more about all the great projects they dream up! Meet Bernie Corner, a local sewist who’s love for all thins sewing stemmed from childhood!

My passion for sewing started when I was very young. I have a very talented Mother who taught me to sew, knit and crochet and is still my go-to person now whenever I get stuck…………even before Google!

My first memorable achievement was knitting a lilac cardigan when I was 9. I was so proud and wish I had kept it. Not sure why I didn’t as I am a typical hoarder now, ahem, I mean ‘crafter’. I also remember sitting as a child with my sister clipping cotton ends from nighties and fur mitts, which my mother used to make and sell to family and friends.

In my twenties I made a lot of my own clothes and used to take in a lot of alterations and repairs to make a little extra cash. After a few years, sewing seemed to leave me unless I needed something repaired myself. Then four years ago I went to a local quilt show and my passion was reignited! I then started watching Create and Craft and discovered Debbie Shore and Jennie Rayment and my sewing obsession went into overdrive.

Most of my makes are for myself, friends and family. I love seeing their faces when I give them something I have made. It is always well appreciated. When I heard the news that Crafter’s Companion was opening the Aycliffe store earlier this year, I was delighted! I have always wanted to share my skills with others and have been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to run sewing workshops. My classes are always aimed at beginners as my key goal is that the project can be finished in class. I was really nervous at first as it was all new to me, but my nerves have well and truly gone now. I regularly have full classes and many ladies are coming back which is absolutely great! Who said the good old peg bag wouldn’t be popular!
