Inspirational tutorial: Create some fun tags!

w1

Brighten up a friend’s day with this set of tags! Add to gift wrapping, or surprise someone with an impromptu token of appreciation and you are sure to put a smile on their face. And the best bit is they are made using freebies from Crafter's Inspiration Magazine Issue 10!

Directions:

s1

Step 1: Gather your supplies. Cut a piece of Watercolour cardstock into thirds (each piece approximately 10cm wide)

s2

Step 2: On a smooth surface (such as a non-stick craft mat) “smush” the ink pads randomly until you have covered an area a little larger than the piece of cardstock.

Step 3: Spritz the ink with a mist spray bottle, be generous but don’t over soak the area.

s3

Step 4: Lay a piece of cardstock face down in the ink and use your fingers to press it into the ink ensuring all areas make contact with the ink.

s4

Step 5: It won’t look like much at this stage. They key is layers! Dry this layer with a heat tool before continuing.

s5

Step 6: Using the remaining ink on your surface, lightly press random areas of the cardstock into the ink.
Step 7: Dry this layer with a heat tool.
Step 8: Repeat for a total of 3 or 4 layers, or until happy with the look. Dry in between each layer.

s6

Step 9: Using clean water, sprinkle water onto the surface using your fingers.
Step 10: Dry with a heat tool. This will leave lighter dots, adding to the overall texture. Repeat steps 2 to 10 for each piece of cardstock.

s7

Step 11: Take the free stamps from the magazine and stamp a selection that you think you’ll use onto Sheena Douglass White Stamping Card using Archival Ink.
Step 12: Stamp also the sentiments from the stamp set. Ensure you leave enough space between them to die cut them at the next stage.

s8

Step 13: Die cut the sentiments using the hexagon dies.

s9

Step 14: Using the same dies, cut also a large selection from white card, black card, and card coloured with Spiced Marmalade Distress Ink.

s10

Step 15: Emboss some black cardstock!

s11

Step 16: Using the smallest hexagon die and a sheet of stencil plastic or acetate, die cut yourself a stencil! Tip: use washy tape to keep the die in place whilst cutting, this ensures an accurate cut.
Step 17: Now use this stencil with Mustard Seed Distress Ink and a sponge dauber to add random texture to the background.

s12

Step 18: Colour the stamped images with Spectrum Noir Markers. Less is more for this project. It is good to have a lot of white showing on the finished images.
Step 19: Fussy cut the images out.

s13

Step 20: Cut the background pieces to 7” tall by 3½” wide. Trim the top corners to complete the tag shape.

s14

Step 21: Add faux stitching using Archival Ink and the 3 different stitch stamps from the stamp set.

s15

Step 22: Now the fun part! …. Using Tacky Glue and Foam Tape, add your embossed card and all the collected shapes to the tags. Layer up the hexagons and use the Foam Tape to add dimension to the sentiment hexagons.

s16

Step 23: Cut black card to 7¼“ tall by 3¾” wide. 1 sheet of A4 card will be enough for 3 tags.

s17
Step 24: Use the Permanent Tape Pen to mount the finished tag onto the pre-cut black card.

Step 25: Trim the top corners of the black card and punch a hole in the top.

Add ribbons of your choice and they are ready to brighten up someone’s day!
