Build-A-Block™ Patchwork Coasters Project

Our new Build-A-Block™ patchwork system - has inspired so many ideas... But we can't resist in giving you one more!

Our fourth step-by-step guide in our dedicated project series, details how you can make this bespoke set of coasters. A perfect compliment to any living space!

You will need

A selection of complementary fabrics
fusible wadding
Build-A-Block™ dies
Gemini die-cutting machine
sewing machine
basic sewing kit

Fabric preparation

For these coasters you need to use the 2” square, 1.5” square and 1.5” quarter square triangle dies from the Build-A-Block™ dies. Prepare your fabrics as follows:

Fabric A (dark fabric)

Cut two 2” squares
Cut seven 1.5” squares
Cut eight 1.5” half square triangles
Cut four 3x9cm (1.25x3.5”) border strips
Cut four 3x11.5cm (1.25x4.5”) border strips
Cut two 7.5x106.5cm (3x42”) backing pieces

Fabric B (mid-tone fabric)

Cut one 2” square
Cut six 1.5” squares
Cut four 1.5” half square triangles
Cut four 3x9cm (1.25x3.5”) border strips
Cut four 3x11.5cm (1.25x4.5”) border strips

Fabric C (light fabric)

Cut one 2” square
Cut six 1.5” squares
Cut four 1.5” half square rectangles

Fusible wadding

Cut four 12.5x12.5cm (5x5”) squares

Sew the two backing pieces of fabric right sides together and press the seam open. This means that all four sides of each coaster can be sewn up and they can be unpicked at the middle seam for turning through to the right side.

Step 1

Sew four pieces of fabric together as shown in the Build-A-Block™ instruction booklet to create the following blocks: 4 Patch / 9 Patch / Shoofly / Friendship Star.

Step 2

Sew the border strips onto each block, right sides together.

Step 3

Iron fusible wadding onto the wrong side of the blocks. Place blocks onto the backing piece, right sides together.

Step 4

Sew around the edges of the coaster on the backing piece using a 0.5cm (¼”) seam allowance, then trim any excess fabric and snip the corners to reduce any bulkiness on the finished coaster.

Step 5

Use a seam ripper to open the centre seam on the backing panel of the coaster from Step 3 to create a turning gap and turn the coaster through it, pushing out the corners.

Step 6

Stitch the turning gap closed by hand then press the coaster. Quilt the coaster as desired.

Step 7

Repeat steps 3 to 5 with the remaining quilt blocks to complete your coasters!
