Easy hair scrunchies

Crafter's Companion – 07/09/19

It’s back to school time and we’ve all been there – trying to juggle a book bag in one hand, a bowl of cereal in the other and a pair of shoes under your arm. It can be a bit of a stressful time trying to fall back into the routine, but by putting this project together, you’re one step closer!

These scrunchies are so much fun to make and your kids will love wearing them, no matter what age they are. You can customise them with their favourite colours or even teach them how to make them so they can create their own. They’re also perfect if you’re teaching your children how to tie their hair up and will give them a bit of independence.

You will need:

Cutting instructions

  • Main piece: 18″ x 4.5″
  • Bow piece: 10″ x 4.5″
  • Elastic: 9″
  • Use a 0.6cm (0.25″) seam allowance throughout the project

Step 1

Fold the bow piece fabric in half along the length with right sides together and lightly press.

Step 2

Using a 0.25″ seam, stitch along one short side, pivot at the corner and sew along the length.

Step 3

Turn the fabric through and press well.

Step 4

Fold under the raw edge 0.25″ and press, then topstitch, turning the gap closed.

Step 5

Fold the main piece of fabric in half along the length with right sides together and lightly press.

Step 6

Using a 0.25″ seam, stitch along the long side.

Step 7

Turn the fabric through and press well.

Step 8

Fasten a safety pin to one end of the elastic, then thread it through the main fabric tube.

Step 9

Once threaded through, tie both end tightly together with a knot.

Step 10

Tuck the raw edges inside each other and stitch the two ‘tucked’ pieces together while stitching down through the elastic to secure in place.

Step 11

Tie the bow piece in a knot over the join to create the bow effect on the scrunchie.
