Easy peasy drawstring bag

Crafter's Companion – 28/09/19

To round off September in style, we thought we’d share a super duper simple project that can be customised in any way that you like. Send your kids off to school in style with this gorgeous drawstring bag! It’s easy and quick to make, and is both pretty and practical – it’s a total winner of a project!

Because this project is so simple, it means that it’s pretty much a blank canvas for embellishments. You can switch up the prints and colours, or add a touch of sparkle or various textures. It can be made completely to the tastes of the recipient or to match a school uniform!

You will need:

Cutting instructions

  • Front panel: 21″ x 18″
  • Back panel: 21″ x 18″
  • Ribbon: 50″ (two pieces)
  • Use a 0.6cm (0.25″) seam allowance throughout the project

Step 1

Mark the casing on the wrong side of the bag front

  • Measure down 2.25″ and mark on each side of the panel
  • Measure down a further 1.25″ and mark on each side
  • Repeat on the back panel piece

Step 2

Pin bag front and back right sides together, and stitch from the top edge to the first casing mark, and backstitch. Star again from the second casing mark and stitch to the bag bottom. Pivot, stitch along the bottom, pivot and repeat up the remaining side leaving the casing gap open.

Step 3

Neaten the raw edges on the three sides with an over lock or zigzag stitch.

Step 4

Turn under the top edge 2″, fold the raw edge under by 0.5″ and press in place. Stitch all the way around and close the turned under fold. Stitch another row of stitches 0.25″ from the top edge to create the channel for the ribbon. Turn out the bag and press.

Step 5

Attach a safety pin to one length of ribbon. Thread ribbon through the casing channel from right side opening, back through and out of the same opening. Tie the ends together in a knot. Thread the second ribbon through, this time from the left side opening.

Step 6

Pull the drawstrings together to close the top of the bag.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed this quick little project as much as we have!
