There’s nothing more delicious than a freshly piped cupcake with a delicate swirl of buttercream on top, but have you ever seen a cupcake that features 3D flowers? With the Nifty Nozzles range by Sugar & Crumbs, you can easily achieve this effect and wow all of your recipients. All you need to do is follow the steps below!
If you need a little bit of a visual hint, try watching this video from Carol McFarland, owner of Sugar & Crumbs, to see the nozzles in action.
You will need:
- Your choice of Nifty Nozzle
- Buttercream icing (follow the step-by-step here)
- Two medium bowls
- Two shades of food colouring
- One piping bag
Wash your new nozzle thoroughly before use. Nifty Nozzles are safe to go through the dishwasher.
Make your buttercream and divide it into two different bowls. Using your food colouring, add a few drops of one shade into one bowl and a few drops of the other into the second bowl.
Mix or ‘paddle’ the buttercream to combine the colour evenly and avoid air bubbles.
Slot your Nifty Nozzle into the piping bag and guide it down to the tip. Snip the piping bag so that the end of your nozzle fits in line with the cut.
Spread your first shade of buttercream around the inside edges of the bag, leaving a gap in the middle for your second colour. Fill up the centre with the second colour, then hold the end of the bag and twist to secure the icing inside.
Use a knife or the back of a spoon to put a thin coat of buttercream on to your cupcake. Hold the filled bag of buttercream with the nozzle just above the cake surface. Squeeze the bag until the icing attaches to the cake, then pull up 1cm, stop squeezing the bag, and relax the pressure from your piping bag, which should release the buttercream on the cake, leaving you with a beautiful flower.
Repeat this process until you have enough flowers for your newly created cake.
If you want to add even more dimension to your flowers and enhance the final design, you can use a Wilton Leaf Tip to pipe 3D leaves!
