How to make a fabric flower hair clip

Crafter's Companion – 14/03/20

Spring is well and truly on the way now, and we’re starting to see buds opening up into beautiful blooms. Bring a touch of spring into your child’s or your accessories with this adorable fabric flower hair clip! We love the gorgeous yellow colours used in this project, but you can personalise to your tastes or create a full set of dainty flowers in a rainbow of colours.

This project doesn’t require a sewing machine at all and can be done with just a needle, thread and some fabric, so give it a go!

You will need:

  • One fat quarter
  • Felt
  • Button
  • Alligator hair clip
  • Needle and thread
  • Glue gun

Cutting instructions:

  • Five 3.5″ circles
  • One felt 1.5″ circle
  • One felt 1.25″ circle
  • Use a 0.6cm (0.25″) seam allowance throughout the project

Step 1

Fold a circle of fabric in half, then half again to give a 0.25″ circle petal.

Step 2

Stitch a small running stitch along the raw edge, pull the thread up to gather, but don’t cut the thread.

Step 3

Repeat with the second fabric circle using the same thread with the first petal attached.

Step 4

Repeat with the three remaining circle petals.

Step 5

Secure the petals together in a star effect, stitching a couple of small stitches in the centre of the petals. Pass the needle through to the back of the flower and secure the petals together again.

Step 6

Sew the 1.25″ felt circle to the front of the flower and sew the button in the centre of the flower.

Step 7

Sew a small felt circle to the back of the flower to cover any raw edges.

Step 8

Attach a hair clip to the felt circle using a hot glue gun.
