Bow Fronted Reindeer Christmas Card

Crafter's Companion – 06/10/20

The snow may not be falling quite yet, but you can imagine yourself among the frost-capped peaks of an alpine wonderland with this festive card! This clever design creates a 3D bow fronted effect to make the Nordic Reindeer design stand out even more.

This Christmas card design uses one of the Gemini Create-a-Card dies and for such an effective end result, it’s really straight-forward to make. Why not take a look through the step-by-step guide below and give it a go?

You will need:

Step 1

Use the Kraft Card to cut a 5.75″ folded square card. To create the bow front, cut a second piece of Kraft Card into a 5.75″ x 8.5″ shape, and score at 1″ on each of the vertical sides.

Step 2

Cut a piece of Watercolour Card into a square, slightly smaller in size than the front of the folded card. Wet with a large brush then use the Aqua Pen in Kingfisher to add spots of colour. Use the large brush again to blend out the colour, leaving a few darker areas. Dry using a heat gun, or leave to dry.

Step 3

Cut a piece of Lightweight Red Card to mat onto the folded section of the bow piece, leaving a small border of the Kraft Card beneath. Do the same with a piece of the patterned Poinsettia paper, cutting it slightly smaller again to leave a border of the red card underneath.

Step 4

Hold the layers of card and patterned paper in place on the front of the bow piece and place the inner frame of the Nordic Reindeer die on top of them all. Fix in place with tape and run through the Gemini Die-Cutting Machine. If the machine doesn’t go through all of the layers first time, remove the top layers and try again.

Step 5

Cut out the detail from the frame on your red card and patterned paper layers and discard to leave a frame. On the Kraft Card layer of the bow piece, use your Spectrum Aqua pens to colour the detail of the trees and reindeer.

Step 6

On the Kraft Card layer of the bow piece, use White Gesso to paint the snowy areas. When dry cover with Tacky Glue and Iridescent Glitter. When dry, stick the red card and patterned paper into place.

Step 7

To create the bow front, wrap the scored 1″ pieces of the bow piece around the Watercolour Card background. Fix this to the front of the folded square card with All Purpose Glue.

Step 8

Die cut the Merry Christmas sentiment in Kraft Card and red card and stick together to create a drop shadow effect and stick to the front of the card. Die cut the Poinsettia and foliage using red card and Kraft Card and use to decorate the card front.
