Cut four 110×6.4cm (43¼x2½”) strips from Fabrics A, C & F
Cut two 110 x 6.4cm (43¼x2½”) strips from Fabrics A, B, C & E
Cut one 10 x 10.2cm (43¼x4”) strip from Fabric A
Cut 16x 4½” isosceles triangles from Fabric C
Cut 16x 4½ x 2½” half rectangle triangles in one direction from Fabric B
Cut 16x 4½ x 2½” half rectangle triangles in the opposite direction from Fabric B
Cut four 11.4 x 11.4cm (4½x4½”) squares from Fabric D
To make the first border, take the 110×6.4cm (43¼x2½”) strips cut from Fabrics A, C and F and divide into four sets (one of each colour). With Fabric A in the centre (see below), stitch each set of three strips together along the long sides ensuring one end is aligned. Trim to 108cm (42½”) and press the seams in the same direction.
Print off the download for the foundation paper piecing design. You will need four copies. Using scraps of Fabrics A and D, and the instructions from the Threaders Foundation Paper Piecing CD rom, complete the four squares then trim to 16.5cm (6½”) square.
Take two of the strip sets from step 1 and add an FPP square to each end using the main quilt to check the direction of the diamond. Set these border pieces aside as they need to be backed and quilted before being joined to the centre panel later.
To make the second border, take the 110×6.4cm (43¼x2½”) strips cut from Fabrics A, B, C & E and the 110x 10.2cm(43¼x4”) strip cut from Fabric A and arrange in order, as below. Stitch the strips together along the long sides ensuring one end is aligned. Alternate the end you start adding the next strip to avoid bowing the fabric. Use the Threaders Shape Creator to sub-cut into 11.4cm (4½”) strips. You will need 8 in total.
Next take the half rectangle triangles and isosceles triangles and make 16 complete sets.
To each strip cut in step 4, add a block from step 5 to each end. The base of the isosceles triangle will join to the strip. Join two of these pieces end to end. You will then have 4 long pieces.
To complete the second border, add an 11.4cm (4½”) square to the ends of two of these long pieces. Again set these aside ready to back and quilt in the next instalment.
