A die-cutting and embossing machine is an essential tool for a crafter. Not only can it precisely cut various materials into various designs, but can also add raised, embossing patterns to many different materials too. With little to no prep time needed, you can create detailed die-cut and embossed designs quickly and easily.
But you may be wondering how does an electronic die-cutting machine work? So let’s break it down!

To begin, you need to choose your die or embossing folder. A die is a specially designed piece of metal with sharp edges that can cut materials when you apply pressure. Much like a cookie cutter, the die can cut materials into a specific shape. An embossing folder is a plastic folder with an embedded design that embosses the material and leaves a detailed pattern when pressure is applied.

Next up you create your plate sandwich combination. This might sound strange, but this refers to the correct arrangement of cutting plates for specific dies, embossing folders and materials. For example, the ‘sandwich’ for a standard embossing folder with the Gemini II, is white cutting plate, embossing folder, then white cutting plate.

Once you have the right plate combination, it’s time to feed it through your machine. If you’re using a manual die cutting machine, such as the Gemini Midi or Gemini Mini, align the plates with the machines opening and turn the handle to feed them through. For an electronic die-cutting machine, like the Gemini II or Gemini Junior, simply insert the plates into the machine, and it will automatically feed them through.
As the plates pass through the machine, two rollers apply pressure, allowing the die or embossing folder to precisely cut or emboss the material. Once the plates emerge from the other side of the machine, you'll have perfectly cut shapes or a beautifully embossed piece.

A few top tips when using your machine:
-
Make sure to clean your metal dies after every use with a pokey tool or die brush. This will ensure every cut is precise.
-
If you’re unsure about your plate sandwich combination, always refer to the machine's user guide for clear instructions.
-
If you find your cardstock is bending and bowing, this means there is too much pressure. Remove a shim from your die cutting sandwich to resolve this.
With no digital set up or software needed, a die-cutting and embossing machine is a quick and straightforward way to create detailed and unique crafting projects!
