Meet the Maker… Donna Ratcliff

Describe yourself in five words

Hopelessly addicted to anything Crafty!

How did you get into craft?

I’ve been crafting since I was a child in one way or another. I was given crafting kits as presents and with a mother and a grandmother who both enjoyed handicrafts my fate was sealed so to speak!

What is a typical day like for you?

There’s not a typical day really. It’s usually a mix of doing admin things for Sheena’s Design Team which I’m the head of, sample making if there’s a tv show coming up, prepping for workshops and designing new stamps.

What are your favourite medium(s) and why?

That’s an easy one! Always going to be a water based medium because of the versatility of them. Love products that you can use on a variety of surfaces and that have a plethora of techniques you can do with them.

Tell us about your favourite creation

Difficult to say because I’m always trying new techniques and products so it’s hard to pick a favourite creation. The thing I’ve had most fun with recently was playing with the Pebeo fabric paints for the launch of Sheena’s stamps to go with the bag making kits from Threaders. Was definitely really enjoyable painting the panels up and then sewing the bag together. Without a doubt I had a “ooh I made that” moment when I looked at the two finished bags.

What projects are you working on now?

I’m making samples with the 3D stencils that I drew, ready for Sheena to release them at the end of the month on the 28th November. I’m also drawing a new stamp set; my lips are sealed on that one though!

Where do you do most of your work?

I have a craft room at home but I can’t get in it at the moment, needs a bit of a tidy. Well actually a huge tidy! So until I have a couple of spare days to dig my way in I’m crafting in the kitchen. If I’m drawing then it’s usually curled up in a comfy chair somewhere.

What has been your favourite new product or discovery over the last year?

Probably have to be the fabric paint, I knew about it but hadn’t tried it properly until a few weeks ago. It opens up whole new creative possibilities which is always good.

Where do you get the inspiration for all your amazing projects?

I get inspiration from everywhere. a colour combination, an interesting view, unusual shapes anything can spark an idea in my head that then roll around in there until I’m thinking about projects, designs etc.

What are your top tips for anyone looking to get started in crafting?

Firstly just jump in! Then next don’t be afraid of what other people think of your makes, if you like it and have enjoyed making it then that’s all that really matters. I think the most important bit of advice though is don’t be afraid of trying things. If you think to yourself “I wonder if that would work” then don’t wonder just try it! The worse that can happen is you waste a bit of card and ink or paint and the best is you come up with new techniques.
