Papercraft is creating with paper and card, using techniques such as cutting, folding and decorating. You can make everything from handmade cards and gift tags to scrapbook pages, paper flowers and decorations.

Start with a card blank, patterned paper, scissors and craft glue or a tape pen. Add a greeting and a few simple decorations, such as stickers or ribbon, to make it your own.

Paper is generally lighter and more flexible, making it ideal for decorative layers and inserts. Cardstock is heavier and sturdier, so it works well for card bases, gift boxes and projects that need to hold their shape.

GSM stands for grams per square metre and measures the weight of paper or card. For sturdy card bases, try 300–350gsm cardstock, with lighter papers around 120–180gsm for mats and layers (decorative layers).

Card blanks are pre-cut card bases, usually with a fold line, ready for you to decorate. Choose a size that fits your design or preference, and pair it with a matching envelope.
